Day 31, (Thurs., June 27, 2013) Davos to Gstaad, Switzerland

- While most of our fellow competitors decided to drive across an alpine mountain range to Gstaad, we decided – along with Car 3 the 1913 Model T Ford of Nicky Bailey and Nadja Saralam – to drive a more direct route along the motorways and to avoid doing the time trials which had been so hard on our cars.

Obviously, now that our cars were finally repaired and running well again, well “almost” well again, although we had only 2 brakes and no steering our mindsets had changed from “competing” to “surviving”! We were both eager to ensure that our cars made it to Paris under their own power in order to qualify for an award.

Day 30 – Schladming to Davos

Pumping Iron

A day crossing mountains, starting with a long timed mountain climb on a narrow gravel track, followed by plenty of steep climbs through dramatic scenery with stunning views, taking us from Austria into Switzerland. We are now in Davos, listening to more tales of gung-ho derrin’ do from Bill Cleyndert, driver of car 15, the silver-bullet Model A Special.

Driving the Impossible

Ten miles out of town from here, climbing a steep mountain pass, the engine throws off its fan blades, destroying the water pump, which explodes internally. Doom and gloom for anyone, this close to Paris, particularly given Bill reckoned there was nothing left of car that remained unbroken. Coasting downhill, it looks as if its game-over...

Day 29 – Bratislava to Schladming

The Sound of Music

The town of Grobming is quite used to the sound of vintage and classic cars filling their narrow cobbled streets as it is here that the Ennstal Classic takes place, an annual classic-car rally which arrived on the scene soon after the first Pirelli Classic Marathons which came this way over 20 years ago.

Driving the Impossible

There is a great mountain climb just outside of town which was closed specially for us this afternoon, and most of us enjoyed finding the energy to storm up to the top, where there is a wonderful wooden chalet which acts as café and restaurant to events. Free bowls of hot goulash soup, free coffees… just what was needed in the bracing mountain air as we all sat on wooden benches exchanging stories of the day.
